$2,405 towards $5,000

When I became a mom, I experienced a life-threatening mental health crisis called postpartum psychosis. Despite an idyllic pregnancy, my body chemistry after childbirth led to 5 days of sleep deprivation, delirious hallucinations, and hospitalization. Thanks to my privileged access to care and supportive village – that's you! – I embarked on a healing journey toward wellness.

Although postpartum psychosis is rare and severe, affecting 1 to 2 in every 1,000 women who give birth with devastating consequences, it’s a stark example of the maternal mental health crisis. Roughly 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression (PPD). This disproportionately impacts low-income women, women of color and marginalized communities, who often face barriers to accessing culturally competent care. The National Institute of Health estimates that postpartum psychiatric illness costs the U.S. $14 billion annually.

Fortunately, maternal mental health challenges are highly treatable, especially when identified early through screening during pregnancy and the postpartum period – which I experienced first-hand! That's why I'm proud to be part of Maternal Mental Health Now (MMHN), an organization dedicated to removing barriers to the prevention, screening, and treatment of perinatal mood disorders in LA County.

As a board member of MMHN, I work with incredible leaders to drive equity-centered systemic change through provider trainings, public awareness, and policy advocacy. Additionally, I’m collaborating with a fellow PPD-survivor mom to organize a documentary screening event later this year – featuring my story! – aimed at raising awareness, reducing stigma, and inspiring policy change on these critical issues.

For my 40th birthday, I’m asking for you to support Maternal Mental Health Now. My goal is to raise $5,000, and your donation will help fund my upcoming documentary screening event!

Your generosity is the best 40th birthday gift I could ask for, and will make a real difference for mothers, families, and communities, while shifting our culture towards compassionate care, healing, and justice for all.
